Da Nang & Hoi An,
Vietnam's championship coast
Dune links, a Luke Donald mountain course and floodlit night golf, all within reach of a UNESCO-listed old town.
This guide is for golfers who want genuine championship design and a cultural payoff off the course. Prioritise Hoiana Shores Golf Club, Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s oceanfront links south of Hoi An, named World's Best New Golf Course in 2020; the Norman Course at Legend Da Nang, Greg Norman's dune layout ranked 4th in Vietnam by Top100GolfCourses; and Ba Na Hills Golf Club, Luke Donald's floodlit mountain course. Montgomerie Links and Legend's Nicklaus Course fill out a longer trip. Come from February to May, when the coast is dry and the links play firm and fast; avoid September to December, the rainy and typhoon season.
Which Da Nang and Hoi An courses should you play first?
Hoiana Shores Golf Club is the trip's centerpiece. Robert Trent Jones Jr. built this oceanfront, links-style course about 8 km south of Hoi An, and it opened in 2020 to the World Golf Awards' World's Best New Golf Course title. In March 2025 it hosted the R&A's Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship, and its holes are marked by red lanterns inspired by Hoi An's Old Town. Visitors are welcome, and the resort sells stay-and-play packages.
Legend Da Nang Golf Resort has two 18s on Truong Sa Street. The Norman Course (also called the Dunes Course), opened in 2010, runs across seaside dunes with blown-out bunkers and views of the Marble Mountains; Top100GolfCourses ranks it 4th in Vietnam and 29th in Asia. The Nicklaus Course, opened in 2020, is a water-heavy resort layout that hosted the Asian Development Tour's BRG Open Golf Championship Danang in 2022, 2023 and 2024, and it is floodlit for night golf. The resort was formerly branded BRG Da Nang Golf Resort.
- Ba Na Hills Golf Club — Luke Donald's first course design, opened in 2016 at the foot of the Ba Na mountains. It stretches 7,858 yards from the back tees and is floodlit from first tee to 18th green.
- Montgomerie Links Vietnam — Colin Montgomerie's 7,090-yard links-style course on sandy coastal ground between Da Nang and Hoi An, with the Marble Mountains in view from many holes. It is open daily to visitors with a tee time and has its own hotel and villas.
When is the best time for golf in Da Nang?
February to May is the sweet spot. The central coast is dry, sea breezes keep mornings comfortable, and the sandy links-style courses play firm and fast — the way their designers intended.
June to August stays dry but turns hot; book the first tee times of the day, or take advantage of the floodlit night golf at Ba Na Hills and Legend's Nicklaus Course. September to December is the rainy and typhoon season, when storms can close courses and disrupt flights, so it is the period to avoid for a dedicated golf trip.
How to plan a 4-day Da Nang golf itinerary
- Day 1 — Legend Da Nang, Norman Course. Start with the dunes and Marble Mountains views, then an evening of seafood near My Khe Beach.
- Day 2 — Hoiana Shores. Drive south for the lantern-marked links, then continue to Hoi An Ancient Town for dinner as the lanterns come on.
- Day 3 — Ba Na Hills. A morning round in the cooler foothills, then the cable car to the Golden Bridge above the course.
- Day 4 — Montgomerie Links or Legend's Nicklaus Course. Play the links between Da Nang and Hoi An, or save the Nicklaus Course for a floodlit evening round before your flight.
Night golf is the region's trump card: on a hot day you can sightsee in the morning and tee off after sunset.
Where to base yourself: Da Nang beach or Hoi An?
The Da Nang beachfront, along My Khe and the coast road south toward the Marble Mountains, is the most practical golf base. Legend Da Nang and Montgomerie Links are close, the airport is near the city, and restaurants are plentiful.
The Hoi An coast puts you closest to Hoiana Shores and to the Ancient Town's evenings, at the cost of longer drives to Ba Na Hills.
The Son Tra Peninsula, on Da Nang's northern edge, offers secluded, forested resorts with sea views, best for travelers who value quiet over proximity. Golfers splitting a week often take three nights in Da Nang and three near Hoi An. Drive times from each hotel are shown on this page.
Beyond the fairways: food and sights
Central Vietnam rewards curious eaters. La Maison 1888 on the Son Tra Peninsula is the region's only One MICHELIN Star restaurant, serving French tasting menus (currently from its resort's Club Lounge). Nén Danang, near the Legend and Montgomerie courses, earned Vietnam's first MICHELIN Green Star for chef Summer Le's seasonal menu built around herbs from the restaurant's own farm. For lunch after a round, Bánh Xèo 76 holds a Bib Gourmand for crisp bánh xèo and charcoal-grilled pork, and in Hoi An, Bánh Mì Phượng draws queues for the sandwich Anthony Bourdain made famous.
- Hoi An Ancient Town — a UNESCO-listed trading port of merchant houses, assembly halls and the Japanese Covered Bridge.
- My Son Sanctuary — Cham Hindu temple ruins in a jungle valley, an easy morning trip from Hoi An.
- Marble Mountains — five limestone peaks with cave pagodas, visible from both Legend and Montgomerie Links.
- Golden Bridge — the giant-hands footbridge at Sun World Ba Na Hills, reached by cable car above the golf club.
Practical tips for golf in Da Nang
- Book tee times ahead for December to February and for weekends, when demand peaks; midweek mornings are easiest to secure.
- Caddies are standard at most clubs in the region and are tipped in cash at the end of the round; ask the club or your hotel for the customary amount.
- Carts are usually optional and paid separately; with heat and humidity, most visitors take one.
- Dress code is conventional: collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, and soft-spike shoes. No denim.
- Transfers are simplest by private car or hotel driver; agree a pickup time for after lunch at the clubhouse.
- Consider night golf at Ba Na Hills or Legend's Nicklaus Course in the hottest months.
- Tee off early to beat the midday heat, and carry more water than you think you need.
Rules, rates and booking policies change, so confirm details directly with the club before you travel.

❓ Golf trip FAQ
What is the best golf course in Da Nang?
Hoiana Shores Golf Club, south of Hoi An, is the standout: a Robert Trent Jones Jr. oceanfront links named World's Best New Golf Course at the 2020 World Golf Awards. The Norman Course at Legend Da Nang, ranked 4th in Vietnam by Top100GolfCourses, is a close rival and is closer to the city.
What is the golf season in Da Nang?
February to May is the best time to play, with dry weather, sea breezes and firm, fast links conditions. June to August is still dry but hot, so tee off early or play under floodlights. September to December is the rainy and typhoon season and is best avoided for a golf trip.
Do I need to book tee times in advance?
Yes. Montgomerie Links asks visitors to hold a tee time, and peak-season mornings across the region fill quickly. Book a few weeks ahead for February to May, or consider a stay-and-play package such as those offered at Hoiana. Confirm availability and current access rules directly with each club.
How far are the courses from the beach hotels?
Most courses are a short drive from the beach hotels. Legend Da Nang and Montgomerie Links sit on the coast between Da Nang and Hoi An, Hoiana Shores lies about 8 km south of Hoi An, and Ba Na Hills is inland at the foot of the mountains. Drive times from each hotel are shown on this page.
Can you play night golf in Da Nang?
Yes. Ba Na Hills Golf Club is fully floodlit from the first tee to the 18th green, and the Nicklaus Course at Legend Da Nang Golf Resort is also lit for night golf. Evening rounds are a good way to avoid the summer heat; confirm night tee times and availability with the club.
Should I stay in Da Nang or Hoi An for golf?
Da Nang's beachfront is the more practical base, close to Legend Da Nang, Montgomerie Links and the airport. Hoi An suits golfers who prioritise Hoiana Shores and want evenings in the Ancient Town. On a week-long trip, splitting nights between the two works well.
