Why Hakone for a Honeymoon trip
For newlyweds, Hakone's signature is a room with its own open-air bath, filled with natural hot-spring water and facing the forest. Plan dinner in your room, served course by course by your attendant, and leave the days for a cruise across Lake Ashi, the ropeway over the steaming Owakudani valley and a stroll through the sculpture gardens of the Hakone Open-Air Museum. Gora and the Lake Ashi shore suit couples best.
Hakone is Japan's classic hot-spring retreat, a volcanic mountain landscape within easy reach of Tokyo by direct train from Shinjuku. Luxury here means a ryokan or resort with private open-air baths, multi-course kaiseki dinners and, on clear days, views of Mount Fuji across Lake Ashi. It does slow, restorative mountain luxury better than almost anywhere in Japan.
When to go: November brings vivid autumn foliage, and spring is mild and green. Winter offers the clearest Mount Fuji views and the most atmospheric outdoor bathing, while June is the rainy season and summer is cooler than Tokyo.
